Step A: choose chord
1) find out exist 2,5,1 chord progression in the song,

a) use tritone substitution to replace 5 dominant 7 chord e.g. G7 to C -> Db7 to C (can use even half tone collide with melody)
e.g C key: Fmaj7 - G11 - Em7 - A7 becomes Fmaj7 - Db9(#11) - Em7 - Eb13
or
b) 2nd dominant to replace 5 minor chord or 5 major chord e.g.Cm to F -> C7 to F,Em to A -> E7 A, or
c) use both a) and b) e.g Dm7 to G7 to C-> D7 to G7 to C -> Ab7 to Db7 to C
d) diminsh 7 substitution to replace 5 dominat 7 chord e.g. G7 to C -> Gdim7 to C
